Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing it will help support the places and people that you visit, and the planet. Read how below.

CARBON REDUCTION:

1. Efforts to Reduce Flying: We have made conscious efforts to reduce the reliance on air travel in our itinerary. We prioritize rail options and minimize avoidable internal flights, ensuring a more environmentally friendly approach to travel. By offering road transfers with multiple stops along the way, we not only reduce the need for additional flights but also provide our travelers with the opportunity to enjoy the scenic countryside and immerse themselves in the local culture. You will be traveling from Bogotá to Bucaramanga.

2. We prioritize energy efficiency in the accommodations we recommend, such as our hotel in Medellin. This hotel features a bioclimatic design, maximizing natural lighting and ventilation to reduce reliance on artificial lighting and air conditioning. Not only does this approach enhance guest comfort, but it also reduces energy consumption and promotes sustainability.

The hotels in the different destinations go further by utilizing efficient equipment and LED lighting fixtures. These measures minimize electricity usage, resulting in reduced carbon emissions and a more environmentally friendly operation.

3. Vegetarian and vegan food is available each day.

ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE

1. Our recommended accommodations prioritize water conservation through various initiatives. These may include reducing water usage through efficient fixtures and appliances, implementing water-saving practices such as linen and towel reuse programs, and incorporating water treatment systems to minimize the impact on local water resources. Notable examples include the use of rainwater harvesting systems and the implementation of wastewater treatment technologies to ensure responsible water management.

2. Our partner establishments actively promote recycling and waste reduction practices.

3. Entrance Fees: Part of the trip's budget is allocated to paying entrance fees to protected areas, national parks, or nature reserves. These fees directly support the conservation and maintenance of these areas, ensuring the protection of wildlife and their habitats. (Monserrate, Cathedral in Zipaquira, Villa de Leyva, Guane and Coffee plantation)

4. We are committed to supporting local communities and preserving the rich biodiversity of the regions we visit. One way we achieve this is by collaborating with local guides who possess extensive knowledge of the area's biodiversity and are actively involved in conservation initiatives.

In each location we visit, we carefully select local guides who have a deep understanding of the region's unique ecosystems, wildlife, and conservation challenges. These guides are passionate advocates for environmental stewardship and possess a wealth of traditional knowledge that has been passed down through generations.

5. Before the trip, we provide comprehensive pre-trip materials that include guidelines and tips on responsible and sustainable travel practices. This may include information on waste reduction, energy conservation, water conservation, and responsible wildlife interactions. We educate travelers on the importance of respecting local cultures, customs, and ecosystems.

6. During the trip, our experienced guides conduct environmental briefings to inform travelers about the local environment, including fragile ecosystems, endangered species, and conservation efforts. These briefings aim to raise awareness and provide practical advice on minimizing their impact on the environment, such as avoiding littering, staying on designated trails, and using reusable water bottles.

LOCAL ECONOMY:

1. Our accommodations in Villa de Leyva and Barichara are locally owned and located in the heart of the old cities. These historic establishments, including the first hotel in Barichara, offer an authentic experience while supporting the local community. Staying in these old houses and hotels preserves the region's architectural heritage and reduces the environmental impact compared to new construction. By choosing these accommodations, travelers can immerse themselves in the charm of the destinations and contribute to their preservation.

2. We prioritize maximizing local economic opportunities and promoting sustainable tourism practices. One way we achieve this is by employing professional local guides in all the destinations we visit. These guides possess extensive knowledge of the region, its history, culture, and natural attractions, enhancing the overall travel experience for our guests.

During our tours, we make it a point to visit craft and artisanal markets, providing travelers with the opportunity to support local artisans and purchase unique handmade products. For example, in Raquira, known for its traditional crafts, we explore the vibrant market where visitors can find a wide variety of beautiful handicrafts.

In addition, we offer a food tour that takes guests to traditional restaurants, allowing them to savor the authentic flavors of the region. From sampling local delicacies in Barichara to enjoying a fruit-tasting experience at Plaza America, we provide opportunities to indulge in local gastronomy while supporting local businesses.

We also incorporate village visits into our itineraries, including destinations such as Zipaquira, Raquira, Villa de Leyva, Socorro, and Barichara. These visits offer insights into the local way of life, and cultural traditions, and provide opportunities for interaction with the community members. By engaging with the local villages, we promote cultural exchange and provide economic benefits to these communities.

EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY, AND DIVERSITY

1. All the partners with whom we collaborate on our tours, or through our office and internet business, have their base in Colombia.

2. We actively promote a diverse and inclusive work environment where individuals from different backgrounds can thrive and contribute their unique perspectives and talents. Our recruitment and hiring processes are designed to attract and select candidates based on their qualifications, skills, and potential, without any bias or prejudice.

3.Our travel agency is proud to be LGBTQ+ friendly. We welcome and celebrate diversity in all its forms, including sexual orientation and gender identity. We believe that everyone should feel safe, respected, and valued during their travel experience.
