Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing it will help support the places and people that you visit, and the planet. Read how below.

CARBON REDUCTION:

At our travel agency, we are committed to reducing carbon emissions and promoting responsible travel. We understand the importance of minimizing the environmental impact of our trips. That's why we actively seek ways to reduce carbon emissions during our tours.

1. We carefully select lodges that are committed to reducing their carbon footprint and operating in a sustainable manner. For example, the Amazon Eco Lodge, one of the lodges we work with, relies on solar panels as their primary energy source. They also prioritize sourcing local products and practice artisanal fishing, promoting sustainable practices within the community. Additionally, these lodges are constructed using materials suitable for the local environment, ensuring sustainability throughout their operations.

In other destinations, such as Medellin, we recommend hotels with a bioclimatic design. These hotels maximize natural lighting and ventilation, reducing the need for artificial lighting and air conditioning. This approach not only enhances guest comfort but also significantly reduces energy consumption and promotes sustainability.

Furthermore, the hotels we partner with utilize energy-efficient equipment and LED lighting fixtures. These measures contribute to minimizing electricity usage, resulting in reduced carbon emissions and a more environmentally friendly operation.

2. Shared Local Transport: We believe in supporting local communities and utilizing shared local transport options whenever possible. In the Amazon, we offer shared public boat transport to the eco-lodge, ensuring a sustainable and authentic experience.

Similarly, when visiting the Rosario Islands, we also opt for shared boat transport. By using shared boats, we reduce the number of individual vessels on the water, minimizing the environmental impact and promoting responsible tourism practices.

3. Human-powered transport is indeed part of the trip, particularly in the Amazon section. While no vehicles are provided, you will have the opportunity to engage in activities such as hiking, kayaking, and paddleboarding. These activities allow you to explore the natural beauty of the Amazon rainforest while minimizing the use of motorized vehicles and reducing carbon emissions.

4. Throughout your trip, including destinations such as the Amazon where we provide meals, vegetarian and vegan food options will be available. We make sure to offer a variety of choices to accommodate those who follow vegetarian and vegan diets. By providing these options, we not only meet the dietary needs of our travelers but also contribute to carbon reduction efforts by promoting plant-based meals.

ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE

1. Our recommended accommodations in the cities (Terrabiohotel, BH Parque 93 and Don Pedro de Heredia) prioritize water conservation through various initiatives. These may include reducing water usage through efficient fixtures and appliances, implementing water-saving practices such as linen and towel reuse programs, and incorporating water treatment systems to minimize the impact on local water resources.

2. The Eco-lodge in the Amazon has implemented rainwater harvesting systems. This not only reduces their water consumption but also helps in the conservation of this precious resource. Additionally, this lodging prioritizes growing their own food in an organic and sustainable way. By doing so, they avoid the use of harmful chemicals and contribute to local food security.

The construction of the eco-lodge and the hotel in Medellin was thought and built t in a sustainable manner. The process has involved utilizing local materials, such as wood, natural fibers, raw earth, and ceramics while adhering to traditional techniques. This not only ensures the lodgings blend harmoniously with the surrounding environment but also serves as a laboratory for natural and sustainable architecture.

3. Moreover, all of these accommodations are dedicated to reducing plastic waste and promoting recycling practices. They have implemented measures to minimize the use of plastic and actively encourage guests to recycle during their stay.

4. Your visit to the Colombian Amazon offers an opportunity to support rewilding projects in the region. The Calanoa Project aims to conserve the Amazon's biodiversity and culture through art, design, research, and sustainable tourism. Based in the Colombian Amazon, it serves as a forum for creativity, education, and collaboration. The project works closely with indigenous communities, employing their knowledge and traditional techniques in building sustainable architecture and promoting self-sufficiency. The project encompasses a natural reserve, botanical gardens, and initiatives to preserve local plants and resources. Through its efforts, Calanoa contributes to the protection and sustainable development of the Amazon region.

5. While enjoying your time at the Rosario Islands, you will have the opportunity to support local conservation efforts. The islands are part of the Rosario and San Bernardo Corals National Natural Park, which aims to protect the marine ecosystem and biodiversity of the area. By visiting these islands, you contribute to the preservation of this natural treasure and support the ongoing conservation projects in the region.

6. In the Colombian Amazon, we prioritize supporting local guides who possess extensive knowledge of the region's biodiversity and are actively involved in conservation initiatives. They not only navigate the jungle and spot wildlife but also share insights about the delicate ecosystem and the importance of its preservation. By collaborating with these guides and engaging in community-based projects like the Calanoa Project, we contribute to the sustainable development and conservation of the Amazon rainforest. Our commitment to supporting local communities and preserving the region's biodiversity drives our mission in the Colombian Amazon.

7. Before the trip, we provide comprehensive pre-trip materials that include guidelines and tips on responsible and sustainable travel practices. This may include information on waste reduction, energy conservation, water conservation, and responsible wildlife interactions. We educate travelers on the importance of respecting local cultures, customs, and ecosystems.

LOCAL ECONOMY

We actively maximize local economic opportunities by employing local guides who possess in-depth knowledge of the destinations we visit. In Medellin, we explore the vibrant Comuna 13 neighborhood, known for its transformation and street art, providing economic support to the local community. We also offer a fruit-tasting experience in Medellin, where visitors can sample a variety of locally grown fruits, supporting local farmers and promoting agricultural diversity.

In the Colombian Amazon, we prioritize engaging with indigenous communities and supporting community-based tourism initiatives. Our tours include visits to indigenous villages, where travelers can learn about their way of life, traditions, and cultural practices. We provide opportunities for interaction with the Cocama medicine man, who shares knowledge about traditional healing and the use of medicinal plants.

During our trip, we visit a local coffee farm, providing insight into the coffee production process and supporting the livelihoods of coffee farmers. We ensure that the farm we visit is a working farm, where travelers can see firsthand the cultivation, harvesting, and processing of coffee beans.

In Cartagena, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, we contribute to the local economy by visiting craft markets and supporting local artisans. We encourage travelers to explore the city's rich history and architectural wonders, allowing them to appreciate the cultural heritage while also benefiting the local community.

EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY, AND DIVERSITY

1. All the partners with whom we collaborate on our tours, or through our office and internet business, have their base in Colombia.

2. We almost entirely work with smaller local businesses or families with whom we want to establish a long-term relationship, without intermediaries.

3. We are committed to promoting workplace diversity and fostering equal employment opportunities. We embrace a workplace diversity strategy that values and nurtures individuals without regard to race, gender, sexual orientation, or nationality. We believe in creating an inclusive work environment where everyone can thrive and contribute their unique perspectives and talents. Our goal is to build a diverse team that reflects the richness and diversity of the communities we serve, ensuring fairness, respect, and equal opportunities for all.

4. We pride ourselves on being an LGBTQ+-friendly travel agency. We believe in creating a safe and inclusive environment for all travelers, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Our team is committed to ensuring that every traveler feels welcome, respected, and valued throughout their journey. We work closely with LGBTQ+-friendly accommodations, destinations, and local communities to ensure a positive and affirming travel experience for everyone. Your comfort and well-being are our top priorities, and we are here to support you every step of the way.

5. Our trip is suitable for individuals with vision and hearing impairments, as well as cognitive issues. We prioritize inclusivity and strive to create a welcoming and accessible environment for all travelers. Our team is experienced in accommodating diverse needs and can provide necessary support and assistance throughout the trip. We work closely with accessible accommodations, transportation providers, and local guides who are trained to assist individuals with different abilities. We are committed to ensuring that everyone can fully enjoy their travel experience with us.
