Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing it will help support the places and people that you visit, and the planet. Read how below.

CARBON REDUCTION:

At our travel agency, we are committed to reducing carbon emissions and promoting responsible travel. We understand the importance of minimizing the environmental impact of our trips. That's why we actively seek ways to reduce carbon emissions during our tours. We prioritize sustainable transportation options, encourage energy-efficient accommodations, and support local initiatives that contribute to carbon reduction.

Accommodations and Renewable Energy:
When it comes to accommodations, we prioritize partnering with lodgings that use renewable energy sources. In this trip, we have carefully selected three lodges that are fully committed to reducing their carbon footprint and operating in a sustainable manner. The Amazon Eco Lodge, the Pacific Eco Lodge, and the Indigenous Community in the Pacific all rely on solar panels as their primary energy source. These lodges ensure their basic needs, such as cooling, lighting, and battery charging, are met through renewable energy. In 2023, the Pacific Eco Lodge offers 24 hours of energy and free Wi-Fi, the Amazon Eco Lodge focuses on sourcing local products and practicing artisanal fishing, and in Nuqui 70% is organic food grown in their garden which is reflected in their menu. The lodges have been constructed with sustainability in mind, using materials suitable for the local environment.

Shared Local Transport:
We believe in supporting local communities and utilizing shared local transport options whenever possible. In the Amazon, we offer shared public boat transport to the eco lodge, ensuring a sustainable and authentic experience. Similarly, in Nuqui, we provide local boat transport to access the various destinations in the area. By using shared local transport, we contribute to the local economy and minimize our environmental impact.

Human-Powered Transport:
This trip is designed to immerse you in nature and remote locations. As such, human-powered transport plays a significant role in your experience. Throughout the trip, you'll find yourself in isolated areas where human-powered transport is the primary mode of getting around. From hiking and boat rides in Caño Cristales to horseback riding, hiking, and paddling at the Silence Lake, you'll have the opportunity to connect with nature while minimizing your reliance on motorized vehicles. In the Amazon, activities such as hiking, kayaking, and paddling allow you to explore the region's biodiversity sustainably. Similarly, when staying at the eco-lodge in Nuqui, hiking is the primary means of transportation, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in this pristine environment. The indigenous community also promotes hiking as the main mode of getting around, further showcasing their commitment to sustainable practices.

Sustainable Food Choices:
Throughout your trip, including destinations such as Caño Cristales, the Amazon, and the Pacific, where we provide meals, vegetarian and vegan food options will be available. We make sure to offer a variety of choices to accommodate those who follow vegetarian and vegan diets. By providing these options, we not only meet the dietary needs of our travelers but also contribute to carbon reduction efforts by promoting plant-based meals.

ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE:

Sustainable Accommodation Practices:
At our travel agency, we are committed to promoting responsible travel practices that have positive impacts on nature and wildlife. One important aspect we focus on is the accommodation provided during your trip. We ensure that the lodgings are chosen for your stay actively work to reduce their environmental impacts.

For example, all four lodgings in La Macarena, the eco-lodge in the Amazon, the Pacific ecolodge, and the indigenous community, have implemented rainwater harvesting systems. This not only reduces their water consumption but also helps in the conservation of this precious resource. Additionally, these lodgings prioritize growing their own food in an organic and sustainable way. By doing so, they avoid the use of harmful chemicals and contribute to local food security.

The construction of these lodgings in the Pacific, Amazon, and indigenous communities has been carried out in a sustainable manner. The process has involved utilizing local materials, such as wood, natural fibers, raw earth, and ceramics while adhering to traditional techniques. This not only ensures the lodgings blend harmoniously with the surrounding environment but also serves as a laboratory for natural and sustainable architecture.

Moreover, all of these accommodations are dedicated to reducing plastic waste and promoting recycling practices. They have implemented measures to minimize the use of plastic and actively encourage guests to recycle during their stay.

Nature Recovery and Rewilding Initiatives:

During your trip to Caño Cristales, the Colombian Amazon, Nuqui la Bayka, and Kiparate, you will have the opportunity to contribute to nature recovery and rewilding initiatives. These destinations are not only breathtakingly beautiful but also serve as important habitats for diverse ecosystems and wildlife. By participating in this trip, you are actively supporting conservation efforts and sustainable practices. Here are some notable initiatives:

1. Caño Cristales: As you explore the vibrant colors and unique landscapes of Caño Cristales, you are indirectly contributing to the conservation of this natural wonder. Entrance fees collected at the site go towards the preservation of the area, ensuring its protection for future generations. (Entrance to National Parks and Cormacarena)

2. Colombian Amazon: Your visit to the Colombian Amazon offers an opportunity to support rewilding projects in the region. The Calanoa Project aims to conserve the Amazon's biodiversity and culture through art, design, research, and sustainable tourism. Based in the Colombian Amazon, it serves as a forum for creativity, education, and collaboration. The project works closely with indigenous communities, employing their knowledge and traditional techniques in building sustainable architecture and promoting self-sufficiency. The project encompasses a natural reserve, botanical gardens, and initiatives to preserve local plants and resources. Through its efforts, Calanoa contributes to the protection and sustainable development of the Amazon region.

3. In Nuqui, the Bayka community is dedicated to the conservation of their pristine coastal environment. By staying at the eco-lodge in Nuqui, you are directly supporting their efforts. The local guides and community members share their knowledge of the area's biodiversity and conservation challenges, creating awareness.

4. Your visit to the Kiparate Indigenous Community offers a chance to engage with traditional practices and support their nature recovery initiatives. The community members work towards the sustainable management of their lands, protecting the surrounding forests and wildlife. By participating in activities and purchasing local handicrafts, you contribute to their livelihoods and the preservation of their cultural heritage.

---> Through entrance fees, the use of local guides, donations, and the gathering of data, this trip actively supports nature recovery and rewilding projects in these remarkable destinations.

Expert Local Guides:

When exploring natural environments, we ensure that our guides have a deep understanding of the area. They include professionals affiliated with National Parks, experienced biology experts, and indigenous individuals who have lived in the region for generations. Their expertise and firsthand knowledge of the local ecosystem allow them to offer unique insights and enhance your nature experience. You can trust that our expert guides will provide you with a memorable and informative journey through the natural wonders of each destination."

LOCAL ECONOMY

Locally owned accommodations:
In the destinations of La Macarena, The Amazon, The Pacific, and the indigenous community, we exclusively collaborate with locally owned accommodations. Unlike larger cities like Bogotá and Medellin, where the tourism industry is often dominated by larger establishments, we prioritize working with local businesses and community-owned lodgings. By choosing these accommodations, you not only get an authentic and immersive experience but also directly contribute to the economic empowerment and sustainable development of the local communities in these beautiful destinations:

Local Economic Opportunities:
Supporting local economies is an integral part of our responsible travel philosophy. We strive to maximize local economic opportunities in various ways throughout our trips.

1. Local guides: We prioritize the employment of local guides who possess extensive knowledge and expertise about the destinations we visit. These guides are often from the surrounding communities, ensuring that you receive an authentic and insightful experience while directly benefiting the local workforce.
2. Local & Sustainable Dining: In La Macarena, The Amazon, The Pacific, and indigenous communities, we prioritize local and sustainable dining. We source ingredients from local farmers, promoting economic well-being and sustainable agriculture. Our chefs collaborate with the community, preserving traditions and minimizing environmental impact.
3. The Murals of Mocagua, an initiative of the Calanoa reserve, exemplifies the potential for art and traditional culture to foster economic well-being, cultural identity, and environmental conservation within a community. By promoting sustainable forest and river resource management alongside artistic projects, the initiative aims to contribute significantly to the economic prosperity of the community. Through public and communal art experiences, the facades of houses are adorned with meaningful motifs representing indigenous clans, creating a vibrant tapestry that celebrates local heritage while generating opportunities for the community's economic growth.
3. The Embera Dóbida artisans of this community work hand in hand with Artesanías de Colombia to develop and strengthen their craftsmanship in chaquira beadwork, wérregue fiber basketry, and wood carving using oquendo and chonta materials for bateas (trays), jaibaná (staffs), and animal figures. This collaboration not only preserves and promotes their traditional art forms but also creates economic opportunities for the artisans. Through their skilled craftsmanship, they contribute to the local economy and showcase the cultural richness of their community to visitors and art enthusiasts alike.
4. A visit to Comuna 13 offers economic opportunities for the local community. Vibrant street art and artisanal shops create a thriving cultural scene, while guided tours led by locals provide employment and empower the community. Your visit contributes to the neighborhood's growth and sustainability.
5,"KIPHARA TE" is an initiative owned by the Indigenous Embera Phusabidara community of "Boca de Jagua," which has a population of 380 residents in 75 families. The community is governed by a local council, which is associated with the Major Indigenous Council of the Pacific Coast Zone (CAMIZCOP), a subsidiary of the Association of Indigenous Councils (ASOREWA), and part of the National Indigenous Organization of Colombia (ONIC). The initiative features three accommodation houses called "tambos," each with a capacity for 8 people, totaling accommodation for 24 visitors in beds. There is also a larger "tambo" where up to 60 visitors can be accommodated in tents, providing a total capacity of 84 visitors.
