1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
Simply being in the impressive Atlas mountains. The clean air and the views were exhilarating.
2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
They should have at least some interest in a full day of hiking in the Imlil valley, though our guide was wonderful in adjusting the level of difficulty to our abilities.
For the Ijoukak valley, they should an interest in observing and/or participating in the daily life of the family.
3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Yes, absolutely
4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
It was just what we were looking for, after a desert tour and a few days in Marrakech, less driving around and more hiking and immersion in daily life.
For the first 2 days, we did guided hikes in the mountains with a guide who was very friendly, personable, observant, and knowledgeable about the local history, flora and fauna. This was a well traveled area with lots of tourists, due to the draw of summiting Mount Toubkal, for which this area is used a as base.
The Berber Family lodge had beautiful views, excellent and plentiful food. It was run entirely by members of one nuclear family, who were very kind and attentive to our needs.
Our second 2 days were spent in a tiny village in the Ijoukak valley, where one family, involved in subsistence farming, had added a couple of rooms to their home to receive guests. This was a much more isolated area, with only the Tinmel mosque as an attraction (which was under renovation). Our days were spent in observing and to some degree participating in the daily life of the family, such as cooking, feeding the animals, fetching grasses from the fields for the animals. Said is a very kind and gracious host, and he showed us some projects for which he has received NGO funding for water conservation and solar electricity projects.
Responsible Travel
As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing it will help support the places and people that you visit, and the planet. Read how below.

On this trip we will be staying at family-run homestays in rural Berber villages and by that you are supporting the host families, their staff and the local community. Homestay owners host their space in many ways, which makes each homestay experience unique and full of discovery. Live in an informal setting and get an opportunity to interact with the hosts, experience the local culture and try out Berber’s rich cuisine. With small numbers of individuals staying in small properties this means that the impact on the environment and the communities is reduced, as waste, lighting etc, will be minimal. Drinking water is provided at the homestays and the vehicles in large 5-litre containers to reduce plastic waste so we encourage our travelers to use refillable water bottles. These 5-litre containers are also reused by the homestays and the local community to store olive oil, olives, preserved lemons or any liquid.People
In conjunction with a local organisation in the village of Outakherri, we helped with their solar panel project to provide the village with drinking water. During this trip we will also visit a local women's co-operative, which help local women to be more independent and take care of their families if they are in difficult situations. There are also opportunities for us to stop at one of the weekly markets in the High Atlas, where travelers can learn about the way the locals produce their products and give back to the local community. All products sold in these markets are sourced from the surrounding local communities. We will also visit the historic 12th century Tin Mal Mosque as well as a pottery village nearby and see how clay tagines are made – there is the chance to purchase tagines to help support the locals. All supplies are purchased locally as much as possible throughout the trip, eating at the homestays and encouraging our travelers to purchase souvenirs from local artisans.Popular similar vacations
