1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
Simply being in the impressive Atlas mountains. The clean air and the views were exhilarating.2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
They should have at least some interest in a full day of hiking in the Imlil valley, though our guide was wonderful in adjusting the level of difficulty to our abilities. For the Ijoukak valley, they should an interest in observing and/or participating in the daily life of the family.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Yes, absolutely4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
It was just what we were looking for, after a desert tour and a few days in Marrakech, less driving around and more hiking and immersion in daily life. For the first 2 days, we did guided hikes in the mountains with a guide who was very friendly, personable, observant, and knowledgeable about the local history, flora and fauna. This was a well traveled area with lots of tourists, due to the draw of summiting Mount Toubkal, for which this area is used a as base. The Berber Family lodge had beautiful views, excellent and plentiful food. It was run entirely by members of one nuclear family, who were very kind and attentive to our needs. Our second 2 days were spent in a tiny village in the Ijoukak valley, where one family, involved in subsistence farming, had added a couple of rooms to their home to receive guests. This was a much more isolated area, with only the Tinmel mosque as an attraction (which was under renovation). Our days were spent in observing and to some degree participating in the daily life of the family, such as cooking, feeding the animals, fetching grasses from the fields for the animals. Said is a very kind and gracious host, and he showed us some projects for which he has received NGO funding for water conservation and solar electricity projects.Holiday Reviews
