Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing it will help support the places and people that you visit, and the planet. Read how below.

Planet

The wildlife and ecosystems of the Laikipia Plateau are of international importance, and we are committed to their preservation and protection. In particular, Laikipia is an important ecosystem for dry-country species and species more commonly associated with higher altitudes given the plateau's proximity to Mt Kenya. Laikipia supports valuable populations of lion, leopard, rhino, elephant, giraffe, striped hyena, zorilla, aardwolf and much more. In order to do our part to protect this ecosystem, we will never drive off-road in sensitive areas. We will also never crowd a sighting, nor will we pursue an animal that chooses to move away from us. This tour may encounter young animals, such as wild dog puppies, and we will never remain at a den site if our presence is disturbing these animals. This tour includes several night drives - we will never spotlight a diurnal animal, nor will we ever spotlight a young, injured or otherwise distressed animal.

The ecosystem in Laikipa is sensitive, and we are determined to ensure that the impact of ecotourism in this area is positive. To this end, we ask clients to limit their use of water where possible, including limiting the length of showers and containing the amount of superfluous water used during their stay. We also ask clients to limit their use of single-use plastics during their vacation.

People

It is of the utmost importance that ecotourism delivers net benefits to local people and the communities of which they are a part - after all, it is their land and wildlife many clients travel all of this way to see. By ensuring that local people benefit from our visit, we are doing our part to ensure that local communities attach benefit to local wildlife and the ecosystems they inhabit, which in turn greatly increases the vested interest these communities have in protecting and conserving the wildlife and wild places we love. To this end, we insist that local suppliers employ local people, and guests should expect that, throughout this tour, drivers, guides, cooks and housekeeping staff are all Kenyan.

We ask all clients to be patient, kind and respectful in their interactions with local people throughout their stay. Historically, relations between conservationists and local people on the Laikipia Plateau have been fractious, and it is of the utmost importance that ecotourism is seen as a positive force by local people. We therefore ask clients to be courteous and polite to all members of the local community that we meet during our stay.
