1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
Doing road trip in a loveley 4x4 Landcruiser, exploring the beautiful landscapes, mountains, wadis, and amazing country of Oman. Each area visited from mountain to desert to coast were fascinating, the people so friendly and welcoming. Would certainly consider a return visit in the future.
2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
Look forward to some amazing off road/track driving and swimming in wadis. Also be aware that the tourist industry is predominently run by Indians and therefore every hotel will have a bias on Indian and spicy food. Do respect the local traditions as far as dress is concerned, it is appreciated by the locals. Alcohol in the hotel that serve it is incredibly expensive! Even the non Alcoholic beer is £10 a tin.
3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Vacation benefitted local people. Tourism is a big industry as this is such a lovely country which fortunately is managing to remain traditional. Hotel staff are mainly Indian, but the villagers gain from visitors and really appreciate them. Amazingly
there are still a lot of plastic water bottles strewn around the countryside, a lot of which are legit by locals. The hotels do use plastic water bottles, though in Shangri La Muscat we were given a refillable water bottle to use, with plenty of water points around the grounds.
4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
Amazing, the ground agents in Muscat, led by Sajad, were so helpful ,to the point of phoning us on our trip in order to make sure everything was ok. Really impressive! Just like to say a big thank you to Mark from the host company for his passion and enthusiasm about Oman. He “sold it” to us on every level and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Would book with them again.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
The different culture was very interesting as exemplified by the Bait Zubair museum in Muscat and the Bedouin experience in the Desert.
2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
Take a travel kettle
Understand exactly what is included as the itinerary was not always clear
Don’t be frightened to self drive
Don’t have a car from Rent a Car
Ladies to take clothes that cover but are cool
3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Staying in village guest houses is really good for us and for the village economy
4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
It was superb. Oman is an amazing place.
We expect to be going back next year.
If you were not a seasoned traveler then Undiscovered Destinations would probably just give you what was easiest and not what was right for you. They were not good at detail and we probably not use them again.
Responsible Travel
As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing it will help support the places and people that you visit, and the planet. Read how below.
Planet
On this tour travelers visit, Ras al Jinz Turtle Reserve, Oman's leading conservation project for the protection of turtles. Ras Al Jinz Turtle Reserve was established in 1996 as a major eco-tourism project to protect turtle breeding and educate tourists about the breeding patterns and exploitation of turtles. The large visitor center is well equipped and provides the ideal base for educational programmes run by the knowledgeable and enthusiastic resident team.Visitors can go down to the beach with a resident guide in the evening and in the morning at sunrise. Visitors must at all times follow the instructions of the resident experts and must stay a designated distance behind the turtles so as not to disturb them. The project also helps local people to see the importance of conservation.
Water is a precious resource and nowhere more so than in the arid region of the Arabian peninsular. We work with our local team to ensure that the accommodation used actively encourages guests to use water wisely. Any possible savings on water usage had a direct benefit to carbon emissions due to the energy used in the treatment of waste water.
People
By keeping our tours involved with the communities we visit, the people who benefit from our tours in Oman are the local people; drivers, hoteliers, and restaurateurs, local guides - even the Bedouin from whom you can buy fresh fruit while traveling. We only use small scale accommodation on this tour and not large hotel chains. Revenue from entrance fees directly contributes to the ongoing maintenance and protecting the local heritage such as Jabrin Castle. We only employ local staff and unlike many operators we believe that to send a foreign Tour Leader along to accompany your trip is an unnecessary burden on cost and the overall footprint of the tour. We believe that locals know best. Our local operators only use locally owned accommodation. This means your money stays in the area to benefit the local community.
In order to allow our clients to make an informed decision on where a greater proportion of their money should be spent, we avoid including pre-paid full board meals where possible. Local restaurants and cafes then benefit.
This tour is operated on a private basis and we do not operate on the basis of large bus or coach tours keeping our impacts as low as possible.
